History of Rome
Rome was founded in753BC by its first king, Romulus. It grew into a rich and powerful city during the next few hundred years. By AD 117 the Roman Empire included the whole of Italy, all the lands around the Mediterranean and much of Europe, including England, Wales and parts of Scotland. Rome was ruled by emperors and it became an even greater power.
The emperor Constantine the Great had a vision of a cross in the sky before the Battle of Milvian Bridge in 312AD. He was successful in battle and he attributed this to the power of Christianity. He declared that Rome would be a Christian empire and he built churches, including St Peter’s Basilica.
Rome continued to prosper as a result of its trade links with other parts of Europe and its position at the centre of the Catholic Church. However, by AD476 Rome was sacked again, this time by the Vandals. The emperor was powerless to stop them as they marched through Italy towards Rome. This time there was no turning back and Rome fell into decline. It was no longer the great city it once had been.
Modern day Rome
In 1870 Rome became the capital of Italy and it began to grow again. It was now a city of wide boulevards and grand public buildings. Mussolini, the Italian dictator, made changes in the city during the 1920s and 1930s. He wanted to make Rome into a showpiece for his fascist regime.
Today, Rome is once again a thriving city and a popular tourist destination. Visitors come from all over the world to see its ancient ruins, art galleries and museums.
